William B. Tolman, William Greenleaf Eliot Professor of Chemistry in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has been named vice dean of research and entrepreneurship.

Tolman, who has been in his new role since July 1, will focus on innovation and entrepreneurship, supporting faculty in their endeavors to commercialize and disseminate their research. He will also aid faculty in identifying funding opportunities and developing competitive grant proposals.

“In addition to doing work that has intrinsic and educational value, we should also aim to do research and scholarship that has real-world impact,” explained Tolman. To this end, the newly minted vice dean will work to enhance infrastructure that will lead to new inventions, new products, and the creation of new companies.
