Congrats to WashU alums Morgan DeBaun, Jonathan Jackson, Aaron Samuels and Jeff Nelson whose startup Blavity just raised $6.5 million in its first funding round.
Blavity is a technology and media company by and for black millennials. Founded in July 2014, the company has become one of the fastest-growing digital media outlets on the web, reaching more than seven-million millennials every month. Blavity was founded on the notion that black millennials aren’t represented or served in mainstream media despite their multibillion-dollar buying power.
According to Blavity’s website, the company plans to use the money to reinvest in its many brands: Blavity News, AfroTech, 21Ninety, Shadow & Act and Travel Noire. They also are opening a new office in Atlanta with an eye toward expanding their engineering and data team.
